Anticipating future housing development in the area, the house’s square-shaped plan was rotated 45 degrees from the site to maintain views. In order to reduce materials and labor costs, certain elements were entrusted with two functions. The metal roofing laid across the two free-standing exterior walls functions as the roof material as well as working as the tension member, and by securing them to the ground the cables bear the lateral forces acting on them. For the material of the two walls, OSB was used in the interior in place of structural plywood that can bear the in-plane stiffness. The material was used as the interior finish on its own, where again, one thing carries two meanings.
