This project is aimed to explore the typology of traditional Japanese farmhouses and vernacular homes. However, building an authentic wooden roof structure today poses challenges in terms of budget and material sourcing, and simply replicating traditional methods adds little architectural value.
Therefore, we adopted a hybrid structure combining paper tubes – developed through previous projects – and wood, using paper tubes of the necessary structural thickness to create a more powerful interior roof space. The thatched roof was realized by a young team led by Ikuya Sagara, a thatching craftsman based in northern Kobe.
