Styrofoam Housing System

Voluntary Architects’ Network(VAN) + Shigeru Ban Architects are planning to locally produce SHS(Styrofoam Housing System), a panel-type housing that can be easily constructed.SHS is a housing system that can be easily assembled by non-skilled workers using lightweight panels with Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) wrapped around an extruded polystyrene foam insulation material called Styrofoam. We aim to offer this system with affordable prices by using materials that are less affected by the recent sharp rise in building material prices. In addition, the panel production will create employment opportunities by employing Ukrainian refugees at a local factory.
[Cooperation] Daiwa Lease Co., Ltd.

Ukraine

On June 30, 2023, a prototype of the SHS (Styrofoam Housing System) was completed in Lviv, Western Ukraine. The SHS is made of GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) wrapped around insulation panels and is lightweight and easy to construct. The prototype was built in a temporary housing complex in Lviv, where about 1,300 IDPs live, and will be used as a classroom for children to learn music and drawing.
