House for a Dentist

Back

The narrow, rectangular shaped site is divided in two lengthwise areas and the southern half is used for the exterior space while the remaining half is used for interior spaces. Due to poor soil conditions, a structure entirely of reinforced concrete would have required expensive pile foundations. Therefore, the floors were timber structure, to be as lightweight as possible, and two cantilevering walls and a round core of reinforced concrete bear the lateral loads. Instead of creating a closed off courtyard on the southern side, an ivy screen encloses the space that creates shade and allows the breeze to pass through while maintaining a minimal amount of necessary privacy.
