Oita Prefectural Art Museum

Back

The museum is a simple boxed shape so it could be integrated with the surrounding urban context of the center of Oita city. The main aim is to naturally welcome and invite even those who usually do not visit museums. The ground floor is a large atrium space with no column, having just movable walls to create a flexible and adaptable exhibition space. It can create closed exhibitions or exhibitions unified with the atrium. When the horizontal glass bi-folding doors are open, the atrium and its exterior transforms into a large semioutdoor space, relating with the entire neighborhood. In contrast to the ground floor, the third floor is a closed exhibition space appropriate for permanent collections. The external wall is a layer of laminated lumber / steel hybrid columns and solid cedar wooden braces, making a structural pattern that is similar to traditional Oita bamboo crafts.
