This two-story timber structure residence is situated on a site with a narrow street front and a broader clearing deeper in. In relation to the site, a square volume (30m × 30m) is located with a 15m diameter circular courtyard cut out from its center. All of the rooms circulate around the courtyard, and standing at the entrance the rooms radiating around the courtyard can be seen. When the 8 sliding doors of the living room are opened, it was envisioned that the space could be used as one with the courtyard. In order to open the facade to the courtyard, the laminated beams with a cross section of 75mm × 350mm were combined with columns to create a L-shaped structural frame. The end of the L-shape frame which makes up the canopy was set at 2.4m high to maintain a consistent window height and the ceiling heights varied by room from 2.4m to 7.45m. The beams radiated at equal intervals around the courtyard naturally creating a wavy roof form.
