GUILIN SOUTH GATE PRESERVATION AND DISPLAY PROJECT

Back

The large Chinese banyan tree of Guilin is an important feature that constitutes the city scenery together with the tower karst. Inside of the south castle wallgate, conservation trees of 170 years and 220 years stand symmetrically.

Looking at this arrangement, the two trees are consciously planted to protect the gate and they form a big arch, creating a space as if it is a single building. These trees shade people from intense sunlight and create spaces where people gather. In this proposal, the south gate pavilion will provide a space like two banyan trees for people to gather and create a new scenery for the city of Guilin.
