4G Wine Estate

Back

In Japan, sacred trees have been enshrined in Shinto shrines since ancient times, calming people’s hearts and serving as symbols of matchmaking and protection against evil. In this winery project in South Africa, a giant pine tree standing on the middle of the site’s slope is placed at the center, with the building constructed to surround it. The structure is made of wood, with wooden bundles reminiscent of wine barrels and metal hoops forming the columns and roof. The exterior walls utilize local thatching techniques, while the interior walls use materials woven from dismantled old barrels. The aim is to create architecture that is unique to this place, making the most of the local climate and culture.
