From April 20 to July 17, 2026, the Japan Information & Culture Center (JICC) in Washington, D.C. is presenting Shigeru Ban: Shaping Sanctuaries.
The exhibition introduces visitors to Shigeru Ban’s humanitarian approach to architecture through immersive installations featuring his signature paper tube structures and the Paper Partition System, a privacy‑providing shelter system developed for people displaced by disaster and conflict. Within these partitions, visitors encounter examples of Ban’s sustainable cardboard bed design, along with displays of both commercial and humanitarian projects created in collaboration with the Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN). The exhibition highlights how thoughtful design can support dignity and improve living conditions in emergency situations, while also showcasing Ban’s innovative architectural work around the world.
