Complex by the Railroad

Back

A simple rectangular volume containing a reinforced concrete structure shop, office, and residence has been inserted into an irregular pentagonal site bordered by a road, buildings, and a railway line. On the street side, a brise-soleil is used to create an intermediate zone, responding to the angle of the site and the adjacent buildings. On the railway side, a semi-public atrium space̶comprising stairs, walkways, and an elevator̶was inserted into the narrow gap, enclosed by 55 precast piles originally intended for use in foundations. This creates a poetic space where light and shadow move over time, and trains pass through the narrow void in a dreamlike sequence.
