Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport Extension and Renovation

Back

This is an extension and renovation design for the existing terminal building at Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport, taking into account the increase in numbers of passengers and flights. Exposed Japanese cedar is used for the roof structure as well as interior and exterior finishes to create an airport that is a friendly space to stay, not merely a transit facility. A steel truss is used in the longitudinal direction, whereas timber beams are arranged in the transverse direction. These beams pass through the truss and also function as struts, forming a hybrid structural system. This eliminates the need for joists and primary girders to support the timber beams, thereby allowing greater spatial continuity.
