For this extension of the Rietberg Museum, designated as a cultural heritage, limited space was assigned in the park surrounding the museum. To meet these difficult site conditions, an underground space was proposed that took advantage of the Swiss proficiency in tunnel making, with only some toplights emerging in the park. The tunnel construction was thought to start on a neigbouring vacant site, allowing to use the museum and its park even during construction.
