Odawara festival main hall

To build a multipurpose hall for Odawara’s 50th anniversary, the city’s mayor requested timber architecture. Paper tubes were suggested instead as “evolved timber”. Because structural paper tubes were yet to be approved at the time, steel columns were to hold up the space frame roof. Although the paper tubes acted merely as free-standing walls, the pleasant effects, such as the permeability to light, were still achieved.
