Because building codes did not require official permits for the construction of gates, the East Gate of the Odawara Festival was able to become a real paper tube structure. In this Vierendeel gate structure, the primary structural members were the paper tubes, which were connected by steel joints and braced by steel tensile members. Post-tensioned members also ran within the tubes, further stabilizing the structure.
