The renowned Finnish company Artek, producer of Alvar Aalto’s furniture, required a pavilion for Milano Salone. Artek requested that we use UPM Profi, which is a new paper-plastic composite material, produced by the company UPM, as a byproduct of manufacturing labels from paper and plastic. Typically used for reinforcing the corners of packaging, it is available in two different forms: an L-profile 58x58mm and a decking which was only made as a prototype. Strength analysis was conducted on the material, determining that it is strongest in compression with weak resistance to bending moments. Considering this compressive strength, the pavilion’s gable structure was composed of trussed pillars and beams made from, T-profiles composed of two L-profiles and cross shaped profiles from the combination of four L-profiles. The folded-plate roof and exterior walls are formed from the same angle in a “zigzag” arrangement.
