Paper Dome – Amsterdam / Utrecht

Back

“Nomadic Paper Dome” is a hemispherical paper tube structure, designed as a temporary theater for a mime group in Amsterdam. The structure is formed through a grid of short paper tubes connected together with star-shaped joints. This structure and material choice was defined due to the demand for a project which could easily be assembled-disassembled, constructed from re-usable and affordable materials. If the paper tubes had been directly bolted, they would have been difficult to reuse, so post-tensioned steel rods were inserted between the steel joints on both sides of the paper tubes, which make a triangular grid structure. The dome has been used as a multipurpose hall, with it functioning as an ice rink during the winter in Utrecht.
