On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince causing the greatest natural disaster in recent history. 1.2 million people lost their homes and more than half a million people were taking refuge in hand-made tents that are not even water-proofed. By collaborating with professors and students from Universidad Iberoamericana of the Dominican Republic, shelters and temporary homes were built using locally available materials in a community where it was most in need.
