This temporary nursery school was constructed following the earthquake in Ya’an City, Sichuan, on April 20th, 2013. Lushan County in Ya’an City was terribly damaged, and the Miao Miao Nursery School building in Taiping Town was declared uninhabitable. Therefore, in a nearby temporary housing area, we designed a temporary nursery school made of a paper tube structure, so that the local children would be able to attend. Within a floor plan size of 6 meters by 21 meters, two classrooms were organized facing each other divided by a central corridor. A trussed roof composed of paper tubes and steel L-angles made it possible to create a column free interior space. This school was built with the help of volunteers from Southwest Jiaotong University and all throughout China, and by students from Shigeru Ban’s studio at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Many of the volunteers had worked together before in the construction of the paper tube structured temporary school house for Chengdu Hualin Elementary School in Chengdu, Sichuan, in 2008.
