Shigeru Ban is this year’s recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord. Started in 1986, the award recognizes the work of defending and advancing human rights, as well as promoting and protecting peace, freedom, solidarity, world heritage and, in general, the progress of humanity. From the jury: “At all times guided by humanitarian values and with the contribution of volunteers, Shigeru’s work stands as an example of sustainable architecture via the use of recycled materials which has earned him widespread international recognition.”
