In central Italy, three earthquakes have occurred in a row since August. The damage caused by the earthquake that occurred on the 30th of October was large, with some important evacuation centers being set up in response. On November 2nd and 3rd, Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN) visited the sports center in Camerino City which has been set up as one of the shelters in this area, and demonstrated the PPS (Paper Partition System). In response to this, on the 10th of November 50 sets of the PPS were ordered by the Muncipality of Camerino.
On November the 18th VAN delivered the PPS and assembled 28 sets at the center with the help of students in Architecture Faculty at Camerino University. 22 sets will be installed according to the situation at the evacuation center.
VAN has installed more than 3 800 units of PPS in the evacuation centers created directly after the earthquake of East of Japan (2011), the earthquake in Kumamoto (2016) etc.
This is the first time for us to install the PPS in a shelter outside of Japan. It is our hope that the PPS can be implemented as means of ensuring privacy at the time of disaster evacuation, not only in in Japan, but also overseas.
